Spring warmth approaches, dawn arrives
Yet why does the light snow still fly?

With spring’s arrival, you come by with the colored silk ribbon and official seal of an imperial position.
I should leave to go home, search for springhead rocks.
Probably at a future time, have repeated cups of wine
We will miss each other, so many clouds and mountains between us.

Worldly affairs superficial, cannot be sure of the future
People can enjoy good health, yet have white hair.
Do not turn down one more chance to get drunk
This joy difficult to keep.

Desire to be close to good people, do not leave with regret
Both eyelashes congeal tears into pearls.
Don’t forget me, when the swallows first return
At this time please send a letter to me of what is new.

Cold weather, sparrows fill the thin branches
Fly up to perch on the only cold branches with leaves.
Visitors arrive and watch as the blossoms suddenly fall down
Startled birds scatter, the fragrant blossoms fall into the wine vessels.

We drink till it hurts, able to write poetry
We are traveling visitors without cushions to sit on, so drunk do not even notice.
Both of us would drink until vessels empty, flowers wither and springtime arrives
Farewell winter, later on slightly sour plums bud from the branches.

Along a small stream, gulls and egrets a calm togetherness

When departing, they are like elegant drops in the light mist
Human condition, sad and lonely
Looking back, just another ordinary year
Don’t forget my life here had times of both song and brush

Wind blows delicate willows back and forth.
Above the Chaoran Terrace I see what is beyond
Half of the moat full of spring water around a city of flowers.
Misty rain hides a thousand houses.

After the Qing Ming cold food days.
The nature of wine wears off, bringing more lament
I am ready to contact my old friends, think of my hometown
For the time being make a new fire, new tea.
Don’t waste this time, it is for drinking wine and writing poetry.

Qing Ming:  Widely observed day to honor the ancestors by sweeping and then lighting incense around their tombs. Continuing for over 2,500 years, it is fifteen days after the spring equinox.  Cold food days are when no cooking fires are used to honor those passed away.

My Version of the Willow Tree Flowers, After Zhang Zhifu: (Water Dragon Chant)

At first they appear like flowers, look again, they are not flowers
Without people valuing them, they let them fall down.
Leaving their arbor home, they stay near the road
Thinking more and more, like them appear to be without feelings.

But this not true, entwined in branches injures gentle sentiments
Like tender eyes, idle and merrily drunk
Want to open up, but closed again and again.
In dreams follow the wind for many miles
Looking for a departed lover’s place
Orioles cry out, returned consciousness to my quilt.

No regrets for these flowers flying away
Do resent the western garden, where fallen red leaves cannot return.
Dawn arrives, after the rain, where are the petals?
In one pond, duckweed becomes broken and scattered.

Spring scenery has three components
Two go back into the soil, one into the waters
River holds delicate flowers, appears to be from the willow trees
Like little drops, people’s tears at departure.

Calm Wind and Waves

With visitors, carry wine pots into the emerald green hills
River contains autumn shadows, wild geese begin to fly.
In this mortal world it is difficult to meet, talk and laugh with friends
Like the young people who insert chrysanthemum flowers into their hair
before they return home.

Propose a toast till drunkeness signals the end of a happy festival time,
Clouds surround tall and steep mountains
Climb these famous mountains does not have to regret the arrival of dusk.
How many through the ages, do not age to some extent
Like Qi Jinggong of the Niu Mountains
Surely we must all die to make way for the next generations to come.

Recognize spring snow drifts on the river between Min and E mountains
Newly arrived spring, thousands of acres of ripe green grapes for unfiltered wine.

Spring rains darken the south facing terrace.
Mixed wine and song, dancing girls’ white powdered faces moist
One movement of the east winds, rain and clouds rolled up and put away
Sunshine comes down, river and sky one half open.

Lingao Pavilion: Located in the city of Huangzhou.

Huangzhou: Ancient name for the modern day city of Hangzhou.

Min and E mountains: Min is a mountain range in northern Sichuan and southern Gansu provinces. Mt. Emei  is one of the Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains of China. The first Buddhist temple in China was founded here in the first century AD.

Have this regret, without anyone aware of my true circumstances.
Looking around here for the best cold branches to perch for the winter
But cannot find a suitable place so I will stay by the deserted, sandy riverbank.
