Waterbag Dance
Zhou Bangyan
I burn an incense sweet
To temper steamy heat.
Birds chirp at dawn beneath the eaves,
Announcing a fine day. The rising sun
Has dried last night’s raindrops on the lotus leaves,
Which, clear and round, dot water surface. One by one
The lotus blooms stand up with ease
And swing in morning breeze.
My homeland’s far away;
When to return and stay?
My kinsfolk live in south by city wall.
Why should I linger long in the capital?
Will not my fishing friends remember me in May?
In a short-oared light boat, it seems,
I’m back ‘mid lotus blooms in dreams.

注释:
This poem describes the lotus after rain and the poet’s thoughts of home.

“Waterbag Dance” is a lyric by Zhou Bang Yan of the Song Dynasty. This lyric mainly expresses the lyricist’s homesickness. The lyricist thinks of the lotus flowers in his hometown from the lotus flowers in front of his eyes, and speaks to the lotus flowers about the strong homesickness of the wanderer, which is particularly clever and charming. The first piece mainly depicts the lotus flower’s posture, and the second piece is about the lotus flower dreaming back to the hometown. The whole lyric is natural, unadorned and charming. Through the descriptions of the clear round lotus leaves, Jiangnan in May, and the light boat of the fisherman, the pain of homesickness is expressed to the fullest extent.
