Yan Yan” is a character in the classic Chinese novel “Romance of the Three Kingdoms”.

Set in the turbulent era of the late Eastern Han dynasty and the Three Kingdoms period in ancient China, “Romance of the Three Kingdoms” is a historical fiction that recounts the events and battles that took place during that time. The novel features a cast of over 800 characters, each with their own unique personalities and motives, and Yan Yan is one of them.

Yan Yan, also known as Yan Liang, was a military general serving under the kingdom of Wei. He was known for his bravery and military prowess, and was highly valued by his lord, the Wei ruler Cao Cao. However, despite his reputation, Yan Yan was eventually defeated and killed in battle by the rival kingdom of Shu’s famous general, Guan Yu.

Yan Yan’s most notable appearance in the novel occurs in the Battle of Guan Du, in which he was sent by Cao Cao to lead the vanguard against Guan Yu’s army. Despite being heavily outnumbered, Yan Yan fearlessly charged into battle and managed to hold his ground for some time, earning him praise and admiration from both his own army and the enemy’s. However, he eventually met his demise when he was confronted by Guan Yu himself.

Yan Yan’s death was seen as a major blow to the Wei army and was a turning point in the Battle of Guan Du. Despite his defeat, Yan Yan’s bravery and loyalty to his lord remained respected and remembered, and he is often mentioned in later parts of the novel as a symbol of courage and honor.
